2007 Peavine Mountain Restoration Project
Peavine Mountain fire in August 2006
Nevada Land Conservancy has a history of stewardship on Peavine Mountain, beginning with the King's Row cleanup in 2003 and the Seventh Street Pit restoration project in 2004 and 2005 with the U.S. Forest Service and Nevada Department of Wildlife. Nevada Land Conservancy is now working with several dedicated partners on a reseeding effort to ameliorate the effects of the 5,000+-acre Peavine fire in August of 2006. The Peavine Mountain watershed drains directly to the Truckee River, which provides drinking water for the Truckee Meadows communities of Reno and Sparks (population 300,000). Restoring the burn with perennial native plants will prevent additional soil erosion, control noxious weeds, and reduce the burn cycle with fire tolerant perennials, and provide critical habitat for the Truckee/Loyalton mule deer herd. If efforts are not taken to restore this land, it will be overtaken by noxious weeds that include cheatgrass and medusa head.
Volunteers Needed
By working to restore Peavine Mountain, we are preserving one of Northern Nevada's very special places for wildlife and the local community. Aerial reseeding of perennial native grasses is scheduled for mid-March 2007, but hand planting of bitterbrush seedlings is also crucial to this effort. To this end, between 75 - 100 volunteers will be needed on Saturday, March 24, 2007 from 9 am to noon to help plant bitterbrush seedlings. For details or to sign-up, please call Becky at (775) 851-5180. Volunteers are encouraged to wear sunscreen and bring work gloves.
